I remember "Those Were The Days" very well in my childhood. It was the most appropriately titled hit in 1968 since that was one of the most eventful years in my life (I was 6 that year).

It was the second single released on the newly-launched Apple label, founded by the Beatles. The first single on the label was the Beatles' very own "Hey Jude", and in the UK "Those Were The Days" replaced "Hey Jude" at number one. In the USA, "Hey Jude" stayed at number one for longer and "Those Were The Days" stopped in second place behind it. On both sides of the Pond it was a jolly good start for the Apple label. :)

I was only 6 when it came out and I remember it well. It was one of those songs that was played regularly on the radio during its chart success. It didn't get to number one in the USA (it was blocked off by the Beatles' "Hey Jude"), but in the UK it took over the top spot from that Beatles hit and stayed at number one for 6 weeks.

  • A quirky little song that I felt compelled to sing a long with for some reason when it came out.
